Jody Schnetzler attended Ferris State College, then graduated from SVSU with her bachelor’s degree in Art Education. For nearly 35 years, she educated youth and adults in how to use the wonderful media of the art world. She taught high school art in Harbor Beach, West Branch, and elementary art education in Ithaca. During those years she reached over 4,000 students. She has always encouraged students to express themselves using principles and elements of art. They completed daily lessons and also creative expression lessons they developed themselves. This helped expand their ability to think beyond classroom expectations.
Currently, Jody works with alcohol inks, which are often floral with various backgrounds, and acrylics that are often created for the Alma Community Art Center class that she teaches. She loves both mediums. She is a member of the Mid-Michigan Artist Guild, which showcases local artists with an annual show. Other art work includes painted flat stones in the images of Pablo Picasso faces. The painted colors are all white, teal, and black which represent ovarian cancer. Jody is a survivor of stage 4 ovarian cancer for over five years. Her pins sell for $20 and 25% of the sale goes to ovarian cancer research. These make great gifts and each pin comes with all of the signs and symptoms of this terrible disease. It also gives Jody a chance to educate others in a new way. Jody is involved in her community, bringing art to so many. She was contacted by Art Reach of Mt. Pleasant about the Banner Competition. It started in the Ithaca schools and then grew into a large project for the Alma Community Art Center. It gets children excited about their art and then gives them the ability to display it in their community. She is involved with Arts United, a group of volunteers that are creating a Dance Competition/Visual Arts Auction to raise money for United Way. The group has invited area artists to donate a masterpiece for the auction. In 2016 Jody was honored with the Debra Wasik Memorial Teacher Service Award in recognition of her service to the community and education to inspire children to “Make A Difference”. Art has always been a part of her life and as she says, “A smile and great calmness, rosy-up my cheeks.” |
